Whenever your dog is in pain, all you want to do is make its pain go away. This is when Tramadol comes to the rescue. Tramadol is an opioid-based medication that is used to lessen acute or chronic pain in dogs by reducing the brain’s awareness of painful sensations. It can also be used to manage other conditions like diabetic neuropathy, arthritis, fibromyalgiaand other neuropathic pain etc. If your dog has chronic pain and has been prescribed Tramadol, it may take few weeks for the medication to completely start working on dogs. Tramadol is sold under various brand names like ultram, Conzip, and Dromodol etc. Tramadol is an analgesic i.e. pain relief medication. It is helpful for older canines suffering from joint pain, or any short term pain relief required due to any injury. There are also several conditions that are treated with this drug, such as anxiety problem in canines with events like noises, weather or any other event occurring out of its daily routine. However, before administering your dog with Tramadol, you must need to know the below five things.

1. Depression can be treated by Tramadol

Depression is also one of the conditions that can be treated with Tramadol in dogs. Since it is an opiate, it induces mild feelings of euphoria, thus elevating their mood.

2. Tramadol can relieve spinal cord pain in dog

Canine degenerative myelopathy is a spinal cord problem found in older canines that can be highly painful. Tramadol can greatly reduce the pet’s pain and help them lead a normal painless life once again. Tramadol is also used to suppress severe coughing spasms in pets.

3. Dosage of Tramadol for your dog

The dosage of Tramadol must be determined by vet. The dosage starts from around 0.5 mg and goes up to 1.8 mg per pound of the dog, and is given orally every 8-12 hours. Dosage also varies, depending on the amount of pain the pet is suffering from. You need a prescription and a treatment plan from your vet, before giving the medicine to your pet. You should also inform your vet about any medical conditions your pet already suffers from, as well as about any medicines or supplements you are already giving them.

4. Use plain Tramadol while treating dog’s pain

Tramadol affects the brain of your dog in two ways, first, it soothes the pain directly like morphine and secondly, Tramadol blocks constant receiving of signals of pain to the brain, thus promoting a feeling of well-being. Tramadol also promotes the feel good hormones like serotonin, norepinephrine to prevent depression caused by severe pain. Some Tramadol products, especially those made for humans, contain additional active ingredients. Hence, it’s best to use plain Tramadol when treating dogs, as some of the additional ingredients may be harmful for dogs when given as per human dosage.

5. Use only Tramadol injection for dogs and not capsules
Extended release capsules made for humans are not suitable for dogs, as their digestive tracts are much shorter than those of humans, which means, they will often pass the capsule undigested or partially digested. When quicker relief from pain is required in dogs, the vet may go for injecting the medicine. Tramadol can be injected either intravenously into the blood stream or subcutaneously under the skin. Both the methods of injection are equally effective but an IVF injection starts working faster.
